The venue of the Karaga’s appearance is a large lake in central Bangalore call the Sampangi. Bangalore, originally home to hundreds of water-bodies (both natural and man-made), has lost most of them to concrete. Sampangi lake is now a small pool overshadowed by the Kanteerava indoor stadium.
Sathya Sai Baba (1926-2011), one of India’s most well-known global gurus, seen in Bangalore — the site of his second most important hermitage, Brindavan. Born in Andhra Pradesh, he is estimated to have over 10 million devotees globally. The movement has made a number of important civic interventions in healthcare, disaster relief, education, and so on.
